@Reedy, well, actually, we still like Gears :)

<a href="http://passpack.wordpress.com/2008/07/03/google-gears-returns/" rel="nofollow">Brad was convincing</a>.

But I'm glad there's something for everyone now. Almost anyway... We're still waiting on Opera support from Gears, and Linux support from Air. Both I'm told are on the way soon. And Safari is "doable" soon too.

Cheers to you!

[...] Passpack is a service that lets you store a bunch of passwords for safe keeping so that you don’t have to remember them - something that can be pretty handy in this web 2.0 world. There’s a good writeup on WebWare that explains how they keep everything encrypted on the server so that you’ll be safe even if someone breaks into Passpack’s servers. For a while they were using Gears as a way to store those passwords on the client but they’ve just recently switched over to using Adobe AIR. [...]

@Brad
Hello to you! I was just sitting down to write you an email, but yes. We were trying to force Gears to be something it's not: a desktop app.

That made our offline version a bit counter intuitive, and some folks were even disappointed in the fact that we weren't using Gears "properly".

Gears is a great technology for "going offline", and we were, indeed, using it improperly as a stand-alone app. Adobe AIR is the better choice for a stand-alone app since that's what it was built for.

Francesco is working on ways to integrate Gears back into Passpack, but in a way that is more natural.

Of course, if Gears releases a stand-alone platform... that'd be outstanding.

Hi Tara and team! Sorry to see you move away from Gears. Any suggestions on what we can do better? Is there any way I can help?

Best,

@Al
It doesn't do auto-login, no. But I'm pushing for that personally. Stay tuned.

@Richard Davies
Yes, I want the same thing! We had to decide whether to release now (and let people have the backup access you mentioned) or wait until everything was 100% complete. We chose to release now, and integrate features as we go.

Here's what'll be integrated:
* two-way sync
* auto-login (might take longer)
* compact version (less screen real estate)

I'm probably forgetting something, but more is definitely coming.

The application should let you know when a new update is ready.

Cheers!

Great idea! I really like the idea of a desktop app. But after taking a quick look at it, I have one major complaint... syncronization.

Syncronization is only one way. I want the desktop app to mirror my online data. In other words, if I update a password in the desktop app, the password should also be updated online. Otherwise, the two will quickly get out of sync or require too much time manually maintaining them to keep them synced.

As it stands now, the desktop app is only useful as a backup for when you don't have web access.
